The New girl star, 45, shared her loss by posting a series of pictures via Instagram on Friday, January 17.
Among the photos was a picture of her childhood home in Pacific Palisades while it was still standing, while another photo taken from the same vantage point showed it reduced to ash and rubble after the January fire that ravaged the area.
Other photos showed Zooey’s family, incl her sister and Bones star Emily Deschanel48, inside and outside the house has been creating memories for years.
“My childhood home. A marvel of Spanish architecture in the 1920s. Filled with too many amazing memories to count, it was one of the oldest homes in the Palisades and so spectacularly beautiful,” Zoeey wrote in the caption of the post. It wasn’t a mansion, but it was comfortable, lovely, unique and perfect for me.”
In a touching caption, the actress described how much her home meant to her.
“A friend of mine growing up called it “The Church” because the 14-foot stained-glass ceilings in the living room cast colorful shadows at the end of the day. And for me it was a sanctuary, a refuge where we felt the safest. Christmas dinners, Easter egg hunts, trick-or-treating, weddings, birthdays, children’s parties… we celebrated the best moments of our lives there,” Zooey wrote. “Family photos that lined the hallways, artwork, the piano I learned to play on, wedding china, furniture made by my great-great-grandfather…memories of past generations: everything vanished into thin air.”
She continued: “I know we are not alone. Along with another beautiful LA neighborhood, Alta Dena, the streets of my childhood in Pacific Palisades were all but erased as we knew them. So many people lost so much.”
Zoeey continued to pay tribute to those who supported her, her family and community. She also paid special tribute to the firefighters who worked tirelessly on the front line, describing them as “true heroes”.
“To all the people who came out for us and our community and Los Angeles in general: Thank you. To the firefighters who worked around the clock to keep everyone safe: You are our true heroes,” added Zoeey. “To the friends who were so wonderful for thinking of us during this time: you texted and called, came to visit, prepared meals for us, sent clothes to my parents who left with nothing, cheered us on with humor and cried with us when we needed it. Your kindness is the medicine that made this bearable. To the strangers who lifted our spirits with kind gestures: you are the true meaning of community.”
She concluded: “Thank you all for showing us the goodness in your hearts. You have no idea how much this means to us.”
More than 12,000 structures are estimated to have been destroyed in the wildfires that are ravaging parts of Los Angeles, including the exclusive Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Santa Monica and Hollywood Hills. Celebrities like Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Paris Hilton and Miles Teller are among those whose houses were burnt.
