Sir Keir Starmer announced plans to increase the British defense costs from 2.3 percent of national income to 2.5 percent by 2027, claiming that it is vital to oppose the “threat” of Russia.
Starmer told the domestic home that additional consumption in this parliament would fully fund a reduction in British budget for help abroad, admitting that the country had faced “extremely difficult and painful elections”.
The UK prime minister also set up a long -term ambition to spend 3 percent of GDP on Defense “In the next parliament,” as he was preparing to talk this week with US President Donald Trump.
Starmer wants to convince Trump that Europe has the will to step up his own defense, as he tries to convince the US to maintain his security guarantee of Europe, including Ukraine.
Labor leader told MPs Tuesday that an additional investment would be “the biggest permanent increase in defense costs from the end of the Cold War.”
Unlike Trump, Starmer was clear about the origin of the threat he wanted to distract: “Russia is a threat in our waters, in our airspace and our streets.”
“We need to change our posture of national security, because a generational challenge requires a generational answer.”
