During the couple’s 100th episode of “An unplanned podcast,” released on Wednesday, Jan. 8, the couple discussed a viral clip from the infamous May 2024 episode of the podcast in which Matt, 26, claimed he wouldn’t be celebrating Father’s Day until December of that year because their June 2023 celebration was “weak thing”. .” (The couple has two sons, Griffin, 2, and August, 1.)
Abby, 25, kicked off the pair’s reunion with the clip, which has attracted more than 9.4 million views and an avalanche of criticism. “Matt’s Father’s Day Birthday Saga. It was an unforgettable moment from (the) Unplanned podcast in 2024. How would you rate that moment … one out of 10? You have to include the emotional trauma,” Abby asked Matt in the new episode.
Matt replied: “Oh my God, I can laugh about it now (but) at the time I was, like, horrified. I think it’s funny now, I mean, it’s so stupid. The words I said… were also so stupid that I obviously didn’t sound good at all.”
He continued: “I looked so selfish. I looked so full of myself.”
Despite Matt’s apparent remorse, Abby said she believed it was “kind of funny in hindsight”, before adding that she hadn’t actually watched the controversial tape and, as a result, didn’t know how Matt came across it at the time.
“Overall, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the…controversy, but I didn’t watch the clip and maybe the clip made it look really bad,” Abby admitted. “In that case, it’s on us. I guess we needed that.”
At the time, Abby, who was pregnant with the couple’s second child, revealed she had combined her husband’s birthday with Father’s Day 2023 as the two events fell on the same day. The couple had also just returned from their babymoon and Matt admitted the family had been very busy at the time.
Both Abby and Matt agreed to “boycott Father’s Day in the month of June”, as a result of last year’s turnout, choosing to celebrate the occasion in September because “nothing happens in September”.
High school sweethearts have become somewhat familiar with controversy over the years, attracting criticism again in September 2024 when they revealed they had gone out to dinner with friends while their children slept in the family bedroom. “So we ended up taking them for five nights and it became obvious that they weren’t enjoying themselves, so neither were we,” Abby wrote in an Instagram Story at the time. “So THEN we switched our dinner time to AFTER their bedtime and FaceTIMED monitors while we ate. And it turned out muchhhh better for everyone!”
The post was met with widespread disapproval, despite what the source said Us Weekly that families on the cruise had “rooms right next to each other and took turns there,” adding that the children “were never alone and the use of baby monitors was an added precaution.”
Abby and Matt married in July 2019 before welcoming their sons. Since becoming parents, the podcast hosts have shared their relationship and parenting ups and downs through their podcast as well as social media.
