Don’t call it a comeback, but Cameron Diaz is officially back on the red carpet, making her first appearance on the crimson carpet on Wednesday, January 15, after a ten-year hiatus from Hollywood.
When she came out to the Berlin premiere of her new Netflix movie Back in actionshe turned heads in an all-Gucci look with a decidedly relaxed twist that matched her eternally cool California girl aesthetic. She ditched the high heels in favor of Gucci loafers that went with dark denim jeans and a sheer blouse, and topped off with an oversized coat for an extra layer of swagger.
But former model Diaz, 51, has always stood out on the red carpet, and her celebrity peers have long praised her directional style, a unique brand of poetic bohemia that consistently sets her apart.
In her Vogue Cover story from May 2003, by Diaz Charlie’s Angels costar Lucy Liu said of her friend’s wardrobe: “For Cameron, it’s an art form, and it’s all about transformation and change — like turning a skirt into a top. Something might cost $10 or $10,000—if she’s comfortable with that, anyway. She makes it work. She defines her own fashion, and people follow her.”
During her vibrant rise in Hollywood, her red carpet aesthetic read like a masterclass in ’90s-era minimalism. She was a fan of all-black little black dresses that highlighted her mile-long legs, and she would add a red heel to simple black halter pants and a cardigan slung over her shoulders. She loved a stylish hat, a crop top with a bare eye, and lots (and lots) of blue eyeshadow — a look that would feel right at home on today’s Gen-Z style stars.
As she got bigger roles, she occasionally ended up on the worst dressed list. At the 2002 Oscars, she wore an Emanuel Ungaro Haute Couture kimono dress that is now considered ahead of its time.
“Cameron was an associate. She was always open to mixing designers. She looked gorgeous in the outfit and was a delight. Cameron was ahead of everyone,” her stylists at the time, Clare and I have Hallworththey said. “She wore what she thought was right.”
More than 20 years later, a rewind of some of her best looks will serve as definitive proof that Diaz has always been a red carpet winner.
