Last year, In a violent nature turned the slasher genre on its head by telling the classic tale of “a lot of dead in the wild” from the point of view of an unrelenting killer. this year, Presence offers a different kind of perspective shift from horror movies by telling the story of a haunted house from the perspective of a ghost. That he’s from an A-list directing team Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Kopp does Presence even more than interesting.
Here is the latest announcement for Presencestarring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland and Julia Fox.
The voyeuristic, creepy filming is obviously a key component Presenceas the title character—the film’s full description is simply “a family moves into a house in the suburbs and makes sure they’re not alone”—lures and hovers around the family that’s moved onto her lot. This trailer highlights the scary elements of the film and tells us that the ghost is “suffering”, which is never a good quality when the veil is pierced.
Unlike other stories about ghost protagonists trying to get to grips with the living people who suddenly find themselves among them—think The others or bug juice—Presence it leans against that uncomfortably creepy POV, and from the trailer at least we have no idea what form the ghost takes or if it shows up at all.
This would be an intriguing project no matter what, but it comes from Soderbergh (Oscar winner for directing Traffiche has also done different movies like Erin Brockovich, Infectionthe Ocean’s heist films, i Magic Mike) and Koepp (screenwriter of the film Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulland in 2002 Spider-Manto name just a few; he has also directed his share of horror films including Stir of Echoes and Secret window) enhances its potential.
Presence arrives in theaters on January 24. Will you haunt the aisles to see him?
